I owe the major passion I have in cars to him. Sure I loved cars before I watched Nascar, but through competition it makes that love all the more apparent. I still remember the first Nascar race I watched. It was the Richmond race back in 2000, I was only 5 years old. I dont even remember why the race got turned on, no one else in my family really likes Nascar. I do remember Jeff Gordon winning though, and boom, not only a Nascar fan, but also a Jeff Gordon fan.
Every Sunday, my family would go to church, and after if I didnt have a soccer game I'd spend hours watching the race, I'm shocked I was patient enough to just sit and watch for so long, just waiting to see that flamed paint schemed 24 car to drive by again. I still remember during commercial breaks I'd play a game to see if I could stretch out and touch both ends of the couch, starting out by not even being able touch both sides of the couch, to barely scraping each side with my toes and fingers. When I was 7 or 8 he was wrecked at Darlington, and I damn near cried I was so upset at it. When I was in the car the roads were more than just any race now, it was a Nascar race and I was Jeff Gordon, even though I was in the back of an X5. The books, the die-cast cars, the hats, and the collectibles, I had it all.
Sure, I've drifted from that degree of innocent love in the recent years, but deep down inside its still there. You never just lose that kind of love completely, and I've got Jeff Gordan for it being there in the first place. Damn I hope he retires with wins at every track, only one on the record he doesnt have. Few drivers come along with that degree of impact on a sport, and its fan base.

He is leaving while still on top of his game. He has a buttwad of money. Might as well move on to something else. My first NASCAR races was when they showed it on the Wide World of Sports and CBS Sports Spectacular in between other sports. That goes back in into the... nah, I ain't gonna say... a long time ago. My favorite ever is this one.
